Why and disclosures

Michelle suggested this the other day, seemingly out of nowhere, but I liked the idea right away. We both consider ourselves to be environmentally conscious, and studied environmental issues in school. I try to be aware as to how I live and the impact that lifestyle has on the world.

I also try to buy locally, in part for the environmental benefits, but also to support the local economy. I understand people need jobs, and much of the economy is based on peopling buying the things we won't be buying for the next year.

I am not anti-capitalist, nor even anti-consumerist. But I don't believe that even my modest lifestyle is sustainable if it were the standard of living for everyone on earth. I think a lot of the "stuff" that is bought today is not really necessary, and if looked at in light of the resource depletion and pollution it accounts for, would not fit into a sustainable system.*

We are not giving up everything (and we have not finalized all the details) - we will still use computers, have internet access at home, watch TV, drive cars - essentially do the things we do everyday already. But we will not be buying any new clothes, shoes, computers, kitchen gadgets and what not. We are fortunate to already have everything we really need.

In the interest of full disclosure: I actually sell one of the things we won't be buying (photographic prints), and we will have exceptions to allow for business expenses. I also own stock in companies that make and sell the very things we won't be buying.

* I am not a scientist; I don't actually know how many people this planet can sustain.

Here's the conversation that started it all...

ME: i've been thinking about
instituting a 1 year shopping ban
barring food, toiletries, pet supplies, and gifts for other people
after this holiday season
ELLIOTT: uh, ok
why?
ME: i dunno
just feel like it
isn't "why not?" a better question?
ELLIOTT: sure
ME: you in?
business purchases are also ok
ELLIOTT: ah
ME: ah?
ELLIOTT: I was going to ask about biz expenses
ME: but like, no furniture, clothes, decor, art, knicknacks
undecided on food and beverage outside of grocery shopping
ELLIOTT: it is not a bad idea
though one of us does more of that shopping than the other... :)
ME: true
so it's not big sacrifice for you, right?
it wouldn't be such a big deal except for 1 year is a long time
ELLIOTT: i'll give it a try
ME: you can't "give it a try"
that like going veggie until lunch
where's the commitment?
ELLIOTT: should we write a blog about it, and how great we are for making the sacrifice - then hope for a book deal?
ME: i think that's been done
ELLIOTT: d'oh!
ME: would it just be like "1/5/08: today i didn't buy anything"
or like "2/19/08: today Target had a huge sale on Simpsons DVDs. It was a sad day for me :( "
ELLIOTT: what about traveling?
ME: hmmm
traveling okay...
but we should try to mix it with public service
no gifting to each other to get around the rules, except for bdays
ELLIOTT: we should write it all out
ME: didn't we just do that?
ELLIOTT: :'(
ME: what?
ELLIOTT: write it out somewhere other than in this chat box
so we can put it on the fridge or something
ME: so you are in then?
that means no winter sports equipment either
ELLIOTT: let me think about it
ME: i'm also undecided on this "if something breaks" scenario
i think it would be a case-by-case basis depending on how vital it is
ELLIOTT: well, these are the things we need to decide on - and put in writing
ME: i like this "we" business
ELLIOTT: what brought this all about anyway?
ME: nothing
i was just thinking i had a lot of stuff, i think
and recalling that story you sent me from the NYT
ELLIOTT: which one?
ME: about that couple who did that
it was a while back
when i was working in NYC
ELLIOTT: ah
what about food - local only? organic? sugar-free? ;)
ME: NOOOOOOOO! (at least the last one)
i think local only is gonna suck in Maine
potatoes all winter?
maybe US only for food
goodbye tropical fruit :(
ELLIOTT: blueberries and potatoes - what else do we need?
ME: blueberries are only around for like 6 weeks
ELLIOTT: frozen
ME: when does the farmers mkt come back?
ELLIOTT: don't know
ME: i'll let you get back to work
we'll talk specifics later
ELLIOTT: ok
