Black Friday Indeed

The New York Times has this piece on Jdimytai Damour, the temp worker who was trampled to death at a Wal-Mart in Long Island. It's just crazy and senseless...

On Thursday as we were driving back from Thanksgiving I asked Elliott "what would happen if America didn't have Christmas?" It's such an odd atmosphere that is supposed to be of peace, goodwill, blah blah blah. Even non-Christians have fond childhood memories. We had a tree up every year. I mean, what would America look like without Christmas? Would our economy be the same? What would kids sing in music class? It's so ingrained in us, this bizarre creation of a holiday. I can't think of anything about Christmas that isn't manufactured, from the date of December 25 (to co-opt existing pagan rituals), to Santa Claus, to those crazy carols that now start after Halloween, to "Black Friday."

I can't imagine America without what we've twisted "Christmas" into. I think you can see it as a positive as well as a negative. American Christmas has religious ties for those who care for them and the commercial aspect for everyone else. Regardless of your religious affiliation we all like to share the ideas of peace, love, brotherhood, and shopping! Its a sick and beautiful American thing!

As far as Black Friday is concerned that's like Christmas in its own way for the avid shopper! I already started planning this year's outing. I'm getting a giant television for my family room, some clothes for the kids, and some camping supplies/outdoors-y stuff from Sportsman's Guide and their Black Friday sale this year. They're even offering a coupon for $10 off your cart as long as you spend like $100 which isn't hard haha.
